Why is our dental health so important?
There are many reasons why our oral health is important not only because of our smile but the link it shares with our systemic health. At Muse Dental we make it a priority to educate our patients about the importance of their oral hygiene to preserve their dentition and how it links to their overall health.
One of the main purposes for a professional dental hygiene appointment with our hygienists is for them to use their knowledge, skill and technique to clean your teeth. They do this by cleaning above and below the gum line removing food debris, plaque, and tartar (calculus). It is essential to our dental health that this be done routinely at least within 3-6 months intervals. When plaque and tartar (calculus) begin to build up it irritates our gums and causes gum inflammation which then turns into gingivitis. When gingivitis is left untreated it can progress into periodontal disease which now has affected not only our gums but our bone supporting our teeth.
Routine in office dental hygiene care is an important part of your oral health care maintenance and it is imperative that we also establish a good at home routine as well. Our hygienist is here to help customize an oral health plan that is best fitted for you.
Routine dental visits can also help detect dental issues while they are small . When dental concerns go undetected they can grow into larger issues that then can turn into a costly procedure leaving less treatment options available.
Continuing research shows a strong correlation between oral health and our overall systemic health. There have been links established between poor oral hygiene and cardiovascular disease, diabetes, premature labour and low birth weight babies. Patients with these pre-existing systemic conditions are at greater risk for oral complications.
